Mission Statement

To prevent HIV/AIDS through education and to empower people through personal storytelling.

Who Are We?

SAN-FAN Educational Group began January 17th, 1999 as the result of a partnership formed between Minneh Kamau Bushby and Ryan Bushby. It was inspired by the life of the late child Jacinta [Jessy 1990-1997]. In her childhood in Kenya Jessy showed great courage and a deep sense of personal respect by speaking out against the abuse in her own life. Jessy's untimely death and self respect have inspired Minneh to speak out against anything that leads to a lack of self worth. She uses the pain and experience of her own life to ease the pain of others.

Minneh was awarded the "Woman of Distinction" award in Victoria in 2003 for her work in supporting the homeless and poor of the community and for giving many hours of volunteer work for AVI [AIDS Vancouver Island]. She has also given over 800 talks in the community to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS. For this she has received hundreds of letters of gratitude from both children and adults. She approaches this serious matter using the kind of humour that can only be accomplished from one who had had first hand experience in the difficulties involved with the condition as she is HIV positive herself.

Minneh grew up in Kenya where she sang at a wedding at six and taught Sunday school to her peers. In high school she participated in debates, public speaking and drama. After advanced schooling she taught as an untrained high school teacher in her hometown of Uplands.

What Do We Do?

At SAN-FAN Educational Group we provide among other services:

  • Informative presentations that educate people about HIV and AIDS.
  • Uplifting motivational talks that improve moral and self worth.
  • Stories to ease pain and council others.

  • It is our hope that through education we can accomplish both the reduction of new cases of the disease and the reduction of misunderstandings regarding those who have the disease.
